My Experience as a La Semilla Tutor

When I retired from teaching, I wanted to find a meaningful way to spend my time. I heard about La Semilla through Tustin Presbyterian Church, which supported the program, and I was recruited to become a tutor. With my background in teaching grades from 2nd to 5th, I felt this opportunity would be a perfect fit.
Becoming a tutor was driven by my desire to contribute something worthwhile in my retirement. I missed working with kids and believed my experience would be beneficial. Over the years, my experience with La Semilla has been incredibly rewarding. Working one-on-one with students has been fulfilling, even though the pandemic presented challenges with tutoring over Zoom. I appreciate the small group setting at La Semilla, which allows me to provide focused attention to each child.
One particularly memorable experience was tutoring Joseph during the pandemic. He and his cousin Gabriel were in my group after we resumed in-person sessions, and we spent several years together. I believe both of them greatly benefited from the time we shared.
For anyone considering becoming a tutor, I highly recommend giving La Semilla a try. If you have enjoyed working with kids before, you might find this experience very rewarding. It’s a relatively small commitment that has the potential to make a significant impact on a child’s life. Come and observe if you’re unsure – you might discover a new passion in helping students thrive.
